Dogs are man’s best friend due to physical and emotional support they offer to
their owners and family members. Because of this, so many dog owners tend to
allow their canine friend enjoy a variety of foods with little or no precaution on the negative effect of such foods on their health.
However, it is vital to note that what you feed your dog goes a long way in
determining how healthy he or she becomes. To help you understand better, here are the major foods you must keep away from your dogs.

  • Xylitol: Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is found in diet foods, sugarless gum, sugar-free candy, baked goods, toothpaste, mouthwash, chewable vitamins and cough drops. When swallowed, this chemical causes an insulin surge that can cause your dog’s blood sugar to drop to very low levels. It can also cause liver damage when taking in large doses. Vomiting, lethargy, seizures and a loss of coordination are some of the symptoms of swallowing xylitol.

  • Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic for dogs. Chocolate makes dogs vomit, become thirsty, and have diarrhea. Depending in the amount eaten, your dog might experience tremors, seizures, increased heart rate and ultimately death. If you love your dog as much as you think you do, then you should keep chocolate away from your dog.
  • Fat Trimmings and Bones: As tasty as these looks, they can cause your dog to have pancreatitis. Forget what you see in the movies and cartoons where dogs chew bones. In real time your dog can actually get hurt by chewing bones. For one it could choke on a bone, and the bone can splinter and cause serious damage to your its digestive system.
  • Persimmons, Peaches, and Plums: These fruits always have seeds which can easily block your dog’s small intestines. What’s more? They contain cyanide, a chemical that can be very poisonous to dogs.
  • Sugary Foods and Drinks: Excessive intake of sugar is also bad for your dog, just as it is for you. Sugar could lead to overweight but that is not all, your canine friend can also experience dental health challenges and diabetes. Keep your dog away from foods with high sugar content if you want to avoid these health issues.

  • Pantry Stuff: You want to make sure that your pantry is inaccessible to your dog because most of the stuff on the shelves can actually harm him or her when ingested. When taken in large quantities, spices and baking soda for example can be highly toxic to your dog. Make sure your pantry is out of reach to your dog.
  • Salty Foods: Ingesting too much salt can cause your dog to experience a condition known as sodium ion poisoning. This condition is typified by excessive thirst, urination, vomiting, diarrhea, high body temperature, seizures, bloating and death in some cases. Salty foods can actually be fatal if your dog eats too much of them. So, avoid giving your dog chips or pretzels.
  • Garlic and Onions: Both bulbs are known to damage the red blood cells of dogs, causing anemia in the process. They are toxic to your dog. Garlic and onions are also known to contain chemicals that causes gastroenteritis, lethargy, vomiting, breathlessness, and a loss of appetite.
  • Milk and Other Dairy Products: Your four-legged friend wasn’t built to process cow milk products. Nature just didn’t give them the enzyme to break down milk sugar, so a lot of dogs are lactose intolerant. When they ingest dairy products, they might experience vomiting and gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea and pancreatitis. Eating this could also lead to food allergy in dogs.
  • Raw Meat, Fish, And Egg: Giving your dog any of these will increase the risk of ecoli and salmonella infections. There are enzymes in raw eggs that causes dermal issues while raw fish is home to some pathogens. Of a truth these infections occur when a dog has issues with its immune system. However, you can’t gauge your dog’s immune levels by just glancing at it. There is no point risking your dog’s health by feeding him or her with bacteria and parasites. Ensure that you keep your dog away from raw meat, fish and eggs regardless of any benefits that some folks might tout.

  • Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins are known to cause renal failure in dogs. Vomiting, diarrhea, depression, lethargy, and ultimately death (within a few days) follows after the collapse of your dog’s kidneys. Therefore, these fruits are best kept away from your pet.
  • Avocado: Avocado contains persin in its leaves, seeds, bark, and fruit. While persin can be toxic in high doses, dogs are fairly resistant to persin. What this means is that your dog will need to eat a lot of avocados to get harmed. Having some avocado around the house (especially the unripe type) can cause your dog to eat just enough avocado to cause persin poisoning. The avocado seeds, stems, and pits, are particularly difficult to digest and causes fatal instances of choking or gastrointestinal blockages. Too much avocado (persin)can also cause diarrhea and vomiting in dogs.
  • Raw Bread Dough, Syrups and Alcoholic Drinks: Alcohol is poisonous to dogs even when taken in small amounts. The smallest quantity of alcohol can cause liver and brain damage for your dog. Alcoholic intoxication can also lead to vomiting, diarrhea, coordination problems, breathing problems, failure of organ systems, coma and even death.
